All legal professionals who provide services to others — including solo practitioners and paralegals — need a commercial license.

Polyform Noncommercial 1.0.0 is a source-available license drafted by leading intellectual property attorneys (including the team behind Creative Commons). It's written in plain English with a precise legal definition of "noncommercial." The source code is fully visible and auditable — you can read every line that touches your client data.

Any use by a legal professional providing services to clients — whether a solo practitioner, paralegal, or firm of any size. The line is simple: if you're providing legal services to others, you need a commercial license. If you're representing yourself (pro se), studying, or doing academic research, it's free.

The GPU sidecar is optional. Sound Suite works fully without it — using cloud embedding providers (OpenAI, Anthropic) or local Transformers. The sidecar adds local GPU-accelerated AI for embedding, OCR, reranking, and completions via Docker containers. Each sidecar instance that connects to your main server requires a separate $1,000 license.

One-time. Pay once for the main instance ($5,000) and once per sidecar ($1,000 each). No recurring fees. Updates are included.

Yes. The full source code is publicly available on GitHub. You can audit every line, verify there are no backdoors, and confirm exactly what runs on your systems. This is a key advantage over proprietary legal tech — full transparency for the software that touches your client data.

Your documents remain untouched in their original locations. The SQLite database and LanceDB vectors are standard files you can back up or migrate. There's no lock-in.
